If you want to run some electrical work in your wall, you need to know what to do. There are a number of steps that you should take to ensure that you are doing this correctly. Incorrect electrical work is a major hazard and needs to be avoided at all costs.
Get A Permit
A lot of people do not realize that many municipalities require a permit for this type of work. In a lot of areas, you can do the work yourself as long as it is within your own home. However, you might need to complete an electrical exam to obtain a temporary permit to complete the work. The exam is short and will ensure that you know what you are doing before you start.
Open The Wall
If you have a wall that is closed up with drywall, you will need to cut through the first later to get inside. You should then mark a straight line from the electrical source to the destination of the wires. You need to ensure that you are not cutting too much drywall.
Before you do this, you will need to turn off the circuit breakers. After making the markings, you will need to use a saw and cut out the section of drywall that you have marked. You need to carefully set the drywall aside as you will use this later to repair the wall.
Choose Your Auger Bit
To bore the holes that you need, you have to choose the right auger bit. For 12 and 14 gauge wire, you need to look at a ½-inch or 3/8-inch bit as this allows enough space to pull the wire. Smaller holes will make it harder to do this and you need to consider this.
Once you have chosen your bit, you have to drive a hole into the side of the studs in the intended electrical run. You should try to follow a straight line when you do this and clean all of the sawdust and wood chips when you are done.
Run The Electrical Wire
Once you have the holes, you can start to run your wire. Before you pull through a long stretch of wire, you need to unravel it and ensure that it is straight. Leaving the wire in a coil will make it harder to pull and could cause other problems. When pulling the wire, you need to ensure that you do not have too much excess in the walls.
